Centenary Events
Who was Edward Floyer Noel Smith?
Our first Vicar was a man of extraordinary drive and vision. He established the parish of S. Mary the Virgin Tottenham as the Marlborough College Mission in 1884. He gathered the people of God and led them to build the church and other buildings to serve their needs and those of the community. He was an indefatigable preacher of the Gospel, an inspiring teacher and a great worker for social justice. From literally nothing he built up a congregation of 800 communicants and established a work which continues to this day. He died in office, worn out by his labours of twenty five years on 14th March 1908.The parish wishes to mark the centenary, drawing on the past in order to enthuse and invigorate the current and future mission of the parish. This year we look forward to the re-establishing church workin the Mission Hall on Mitchley Road established by Smith but closed for sixty years. The plan to restore the Hill pipe organ to its former glory is in hand, and will add to the richness of worship, enhance local music and increase what we can offer children on school church visits.
Parishioners and well wishers are invited to join us for the Centenary events to see these and the other activities of the parish.
