We’ve loved having Alex as our Organist at St Mary’s. In September he leaves to begin his postgraduate studies and we are looking for someone to come and enjoy playing for Mass.
To enable social distancing we have two Sunday Masses at the moment and our new Organist would be expected to play at these services at 10am and 12noon. They last a little under an hour and include three hymns, a Gloria and Gospel acclamation (all sung by a cantor). A voluntary is played before Mass and as a Recessional.
We have a Grade 1 listed Hill Organ, which was restored comprehensively in 2010 thanks to a National Lottery Heritage Grant. The organ is tuned and maintained regularly. Our repertoire at Mass includes modern worship songs and traditional hymns. In normal times, our congregation enjoys singing.
Our choir is headed up by a member of our congregation, Victoria, and we hope very much our new organist will work well with her. Sadly the choir is not meeting at the moment but ordinarily the Organist records guide tracks and emails them to the choir to rehearse in preparation for Sunday Mass.
The contract also includes nine specified midweek services (eg. Christmas Eve, Good Friday). We would need to review the level of pay if social distancing rules are lifted and we decide to revert to only one Sunday Mass. The Organist is given first refusal for funerals, weddings and baptisms, which regularly crop up, and a separate fee is paid for them. The salary is £6,530 p.a. Offer made subject to an enhanced DBS disclosure.
